2025 marks the fourth year that Freedom Fibre will relaunch its Freedom Fund! As a part of our commitment to communities across North Shropshire, Freedom Fibre’s Freedom Fund will return this spring and will make grants of up to £500 available to community non-profit groups delivering environmental projects. The Freedom Fund previously provided funds for a range of projects such as community orchards and gardens, solar panels, and habitat improvement projects.
We love hearing updates from community groups that we have supported, with Weston Rhyn Toad Patrol Group – a winner from 2024’s Freedom Fund – providing an update this week in the local news about the toad crossing that Freedom Fibre helped to fund.
The Weston Rhyn Toad Patrol Group began in 2024 when group founder Paul and his daughter noticed lots of breeding toads crossing Bronygarth Road. They helped the toads cross where they could, but were saddened to see many toads being accidentally crushed by passing cars.
Distraught by this, Paul set to work creating a local group to find ways to assist the toads and raise awareness, so that more are able to reach their spawning grounds (in their ancestral ponds) and breed successfully. Paul noticed Freedom Fibre’s Freedom Fund and applied for a grant, using the money to fund toad crossing signs to warn motorists.
Since its creation in 2024, the Weston Rhyn Toad Patrol Group has saved nearly 100 toads – it’s great to see the variety of local community groups that Freedom Fibre has helped funded. Stay tuned for the relaunch of 2025’s Freedom Fund in the spring.
