Project Safety Engineer, Irlam, Manchester




The Role

Freedom Fibre are looking for a Project Safety Engineer with a sound understanding of infrastructure type projects through the design, construction and commissioning phases.


The Project Safety Engineer will support the delivery of portfolio of projects that are associated with building a nationwide fibre network. The Project Safety Engineer will support the delivery and the implementation of quality and reliable infrastructure in a safe manner.



Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure adequate arrangements are in place for planning, managing, monitoring and co-ordinating the health and safety for all projects

  • Ensure CDM duties are fulfilled including those of Client, Principal Designer and Principal Contractor

  • Development of CDM strategies in co-ordination with FFL Compliance team

  • Support appointment of competent designers and contractors, along with notification of duty holders

  • Support compliance with applicable legislation, practice and policies

  • Work with the Planning function to ensure programmes factor in relevant activities and are realistic

  • Notify the HSE where appropriate e.g. F10’s etc

  • Co-ordinate health and safety aspects of design to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to mitigate hazards wherever possible and/or appropriate safety arrangements are in place

  • Identify and collect the pre-construction information and request additional surveys if they are needed to fill significant gaps

  • Develop pre-construction information documentation for projects

  • Support in planning and preparation for build including coordinating transition from design into build

  • Attend design and build meetings advising on and acting on risk/ H&S requirements and considerations

  • Manage the flow of health and safety information between those involved

  • Develop and maintain construction phase plans

  • Ensure RAMS are in place and suitably developed for each project

  • Coordinate with H&S team to investigate and monitor accidents/incidents/near misses

  • Produce and update H&S files

  • Support lessons learnt exercises at the various stages of the lifecycle



Reporting to

Project Manager



Skills and Experience

  • Substantial experience in an infrastructure sector e.g. construction, telecoms, nuclear, water, rail

  • Expertise in H&S legislation and guidance including but not limited to CDM

  • Experience and sound understanding of design, engineering assurance and construction

  • Broad sector experience fulfilling client duties and acting as Client/Principal Contractor/Principal Designer

  • Knowledgeable in design risk management process and techniques



Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Construction or H&S qualification(s)

  • Membership to APS, IOSH or similar

  • Engineering qualification – Degree/HNC/HND etc

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Good computer literacy skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Ability to work on own initiative with little or no supervision

  • Work well under pressure

  • Good organisation and planning skills

  • Strong evidence of people management skills
