Dan, a tech enthusiast, avid gamer, content creator, and remote worker in Shropshire, was one of the first to connect to our network in North Shropshire. For someone whose daily life revolves around high-speed internet, a reliable connection was essential. In this case study, Dan shares his experience with our service and how it has transformed the way he works and plays.
Prior to the roll-out of Project Gigabit, the UK government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access fast, reliable broadband, North Shropshire faced significant challenges with internet connectivity. In December 2019, just 3% of premises in the constituency had access to gigabit-capable broadband.
Dan signed up with our partner Squirrel, for their package that enables up to 1Gbps symmetrical speeds, ensuring reliable, high-speed full-fibre connectivity. This upgrade supports his diverse hobbies, including uploading 4K landscape footage to YouTube.
“The Shropshire countryside is famous for its rolling hills and beautiful greenery. Agriculture is a massive part of the lifestyle here and I love to be able to capture the farmland on my doorstep. With my new connection I can very swiftly upload footage from my drone for my family to enjoy on YouTube, often my videos are up to 40 minutes!”
Data from GfK’s most recent Smart Home Survey shows the increasing ownership and appeal of smart home products in the UK. The report shows that since 2019, the number of households with three or more smart home products has doubled to 38%.
Dan is an avid user of these devices.
“I use smart lightbulbs, Tapo smart plugs a smart doorbell and camera – all of which are performing better and more reliable than they were before connecting to the Freedom Fibre network.”
Dan works for himself at home in a role that requires him to be available for video calls, managing a team and website. He has seen a marked improvement in his ability to perform tasks at speed. After work, he enjoys gaming and is currently playing World of Warcraft. With it being a multiplayer experience, he has benefited greatly from rock solid internet.
“Our connection speeds used to be as low as 5 or 6 mbps per second, we even had to negotiate who wanted to download a game on what night! Now, our faster speeds enable more flexibility as games are getting larger and our storage fills up quicker. Being able to download a whole game in a short amount of time means less need to keep adding storage.”
